A Short Note On Diabetes And Adult Onset Diabetes
As of 2014 an estimated 30 million people in the United States alone have diabetes; out of this diabetic population about 95% have type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes (Infographics, 2014). Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes may be preventable. Type 2 diabetes isnââ¬â¢t only seen in adults, this disease is becoming more relevant in children as child obesity increases (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2014, p. [Page #1]). If not detected or controlled many complications can occur such as, ââ¬Å"accelerated development of cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease, loss of visual acuity, and limb amputationsâ⬠(American Academy of Pediatrics, 2014, p. As Mandal stated, FFAs cause insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and the liver. A group of individuals (Lam TKT, Yoshii H, Haber A, Bogdanovic Lam L, Fantus G, Giacca A) conducted a study addressing hepatic insulin resistance caused by FFAs. In this environmentally controlled study, adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were infused with lipid/heparin. Results of this study show an increase in FFAs and insulin resistance (Boden, 2005). Manifestations Signs and symptoms of this disease can be insidious and go unnoticed, therefore unknowingly having this disease for a significant amount of time; such as years. Some of these signs and symptoms are polydipsia, polyuria, increased appetite, fatigue, blurred vision, slow healing sores, frequent infections, darkened areas of skin, and weight loss (Type 2 Diabetes, 2014). Excessive sugar build up in the blood stream extracts fluids from the tissues leading to excessive thirst (polydipsia) followed by excessive urination (polyuria). Since the sugar isnââ¬â¢t being moved into the cells, the cells lack energy. Simply, the cells are starving and your body is trying to compensate for your cells causing increased hunger. Dystopia Transcript Free Essays
Transcript Dystopias are a futuristic, imagined universe which enforce oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological and moral control, such as in the text ââ¬ËWeââ¬â¢ by Yevgeny Zamyatin and ââ¬Ë2081ââ¬â¢ by Chandler Tuttle. Often we see in these societies the ways that humanity can be repressed, losing oneââ¬â¢s individuality and also the ways a hero rises to challenge the Dystopiaââ¬â¢s laws, only to fail and become a victim to the dystopia, all being common conventions of dystopic texts from which we can learn about our own societiesââ¬â¢ flaws. After the long campaigns of One State, the world and all its citizens are under the control of this totalitarian society. Multiple close shots of Harrison Bergeron while he produced his speech about the flaws in their society illuminate to us the oppression and the dark nature of the society while he was dressed in many handicaps. ââ¬Å"They had hoped to destroy in me, any trace of the extraordinary. Harrisonââ¬â¢s parents also demonstrate this oppression by the quick cuts to fragmented memories which are consequentially destroyed by handicaps and how the only ones without handicaps are the unintelligent, evident by Harrisonââ¬â¢s mother and the stuttering news reporter, revealing how degraded the dystopia has caused the human population. As in most dystopic fiction, there is a protagonist which rises against the societyââ¬â¢s laws and then becomes a victim. This is seen in the changes that occur to D-503 in ââ¬ËWe. ââ¬Ë Throu ghout the beginning f the novel, D-503 constantly praises the ââ¬Å"mathematically perfectâ⬠system of One State, evident in the constant inclusion of mathematics in his speech. ââ¬Å"Irrational numbersâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t want root ââ¬â 1. â⬠he says as he displays the effect of this conformist society and how the propaganda around has affected him. This comes to change after being introduced to emotion and imagination by I 330, developing a ââ¬Ësoulââ¬â¢. However, this causes his downfall as he is then subjected to the great operation, which had permanently taken away his free will and imagination, evident by his sudden indifferent attitude to I-330. From this we can see how the convention of the hero becoming a victim to his/her dystopic society. Similarly, Harrison in ââ¬Ë2081ââ¬â¢ undergoes similar events as the film progresses. He creates a performance revealing what the un-handicapped extraordinary can achieve, revealing what the dystopic society was hiding all while diegetic sound is played, highlighting the importance of his actions which continue onward to past his death at the hands of various security officers, becoming a victim to the regime despite fighting against it. Both dystopic texts follow the various conventions and ideas seen in dystopian societies, outlining to us multiple flaws in the human society and flaws we can create. As futuristic settings, these texts offer to us an understanding from which we can summarize that these dystopic texts are cautionary tales which we should learn from to create a brighter future. Les Miserables Throughout peoples lives they will be influenced due to other people and events. In the book Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Jean is influenced by three different people. The first influence on Jean was by the bishop. Another influence on Jean was Cosette. A third influence on Jean was Javert. These influences can all be related to influences in my life. The bishop's influence on Jean relates to my life and the way my grandfather has influenced me. The bishop was one of Jeans first and most important influences involving kindness and forgiveness. The first way that the bishop shows kindness to Jean is by inviting him into his home for dinner and a place to sleep, even though he is an ex-convict and no one else would help him. The next and most powerful act of kindness and forgiveness that the bishop shows to Jean is, when he tells the police that the silver which Jean had actually stole was a gift, and that he had forgotten to take his gift of candlesticks. When the bishop says, "Ah there you are! I am glad to see you, but I gave you the candlesticks too, which are also silver and will bring you two hundred francs"(1/24). When the bishop say's this, Jean is filled with surprise and disbelief, and did not know what to do. From that day on Jean would remember the bishop and his kindness towards him, and use this memory to help others w ho where poor. A person in my life who has influenced me in a way that relates to the way that the bishop influenced Jean is my grandfather. One way that my grandfather has influenced me is by buying me a car on my sixteenth birthday even though I hadn't asked him for it. Another way that my grandfather has been an influence in my life is by helping me make important decisions throughout my life. The last and most important influence that my grandfather has had on me is by taking me into his house and raising me like I was his own son, when my dad and mom where still to young to raise a child. These are just a few examples of how my grandfather has influenced my life. The influences in my life with my grandfather are closely related to the way the bishop had influenced Jean's life. Cosette's influence on Jean is directly related to the influence that my mom has on me. Cosette influences Jean in many different ways throughout the book. One way that she influences Jean is by is by showing him that she trusts him by going with him when he comes to the Thenardiers Inn, this showed Jean that he was doing a good thing and that Cosette would trust him. The second way that Cosette influenced Jean was by simply loving him and giving him a different reason to live, since he was now living and doing good for Cosette. The third way that Jean is influenced by Cosette is by making Marius swear not to tell Cosette, so that she wouldn't be torn apart by the bad news. After Jean tells Marius his secrete he says, "if it had not been for wanting to see her, I should not have made this confession; I should merely have gone away"(4/293). By saying this Jean is confessing every thing about his life so that Cosette can be happy wit Marius. These are all ways that Cosette has had an i nfluence on Jean. A person in my life who's influences on me can be related to Cosettes influence on Jean is my mom. One way that my mom has influenced me through my life is by giving me someone to love when I'm mad at my dad or other people in my life. Another way that my mom has influenced me is by helping me through problems that no one else can help me with. The last example of an influence on my life by my mom is by trusting me to places alone or with friends, even though they it could be far away and she won't know where exactly I will be. We get started in one direction, and before long theres no turning back. Sometimes this isnt that big of a deal, but what a tragedy it is when a life so full of promise gets off track and derails. It can seem like theres no way to change direction. Wouldnt it be wonderful if simply stating the desire for a new path could inspire it to action? Cant hurt to try. Use this easy ice breaker game to find out if your students are in your classroom to find a new direction. Ideal Size Up to 30. Divide larger groups. Use For Introductions in the classroom or at a meeting. Time Needed 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the size of the group. Materials Needed None. Instructions Ask each participant to share their name, a little about the path they chose to take in life, and which path they would choose today if they could do it all over, knowing what they know today.
